why does my fridge or freezer door leave a gap?
a container, shelf or drawer can hold a fridge or freezer door slightly open. dirt on the contact surface or a damaged seal may also prevent a proper seal.
move anything blocking closure and reseat shelves and drawers. check packages near the door and keep interior air vents clear. gently wipe the seal with mild warm soapy water, then dry it and look for splits or gaps where it meets the cabinet.
the linked door-and-airflow guide covers these checks alongside the recommended temperature setting. do not push the door harder, bend hinges or assume a new seal will correct an alignment problem.
if the gap remains, the seal is split or cooling is inadequate, arrange prompt assessment. moist air through a gap can contribute to frost, but that does not identify a cooling-system component. these checks cannot establish whether food affected by inadequate cooling is safe.
possible causes
- stored items or a drawer blocking the door
- dirt on the seal's contact surface
- a damaged seal or door alignment problem
