- difficulty
- easy
- hands-on time
- ~ 15 min
scope: normal hose, wand and head releases, and bag or filter compartments only.
when to get help
- do not dismantle the motor, battery or powered hose. a blockage inside a powered hose, damaged filter, continued overheating or poor suction after these checks needs service.
steps
- disconnect before checking
switch off and unplug, or remove a detachable battery if the manual instructs you to. release the hose, wand and head at their normal connections. remove reachable debris without forcing rods or tools through them.
- empty the bin or change the bag
empty a bagless bin as instructed. for a bagged vacuum, fit the correct new bag with its collar properly seated. do not empty and reuse a disposable bag or force the compartment lid closed.
- check each filter's care instructions
clean or replace the filters as specified. only wash filters marked as washable, and let them dry completely before refitting. some exhaust filters need replacement rather than washing.
diy warning
working on appliances can involve mains electricity, water and moving parts. always disconnect power and water before you start. in Australia, gas work must be done by a licensed gasfitter, and fixed (hard-wired) electrical work by a licensed electrician. everything on this site is guidance only, and any repair you carry out is at your own risk. we are not responsible for any damage or injury caused by attempting a repair. if you are not confident, please use a qualified technician.
