what to check when a washing machine will not start or unlock
a washer that will not start needs different checks from one whose door will not unlock. check trapped clothing and start settings for the first problem; for a locked door, check retained water or cooling and wait for normal release rather than forcing the handle.

when to get help
- if the door will not latch or release after the normal conditions have cleared, or the programme still will not start, arrange service. leave internal lock and wiring checks to the technician.
steps
- if the wash will not start
remove clothing caught at the door and close it gently. check delayed start and the control-lock setting, then use the start sequence in the operating instructions.
- if the door will not open
check the display for cooling and look for water remaining in the drum. follow the normal drain or cooling sequence and wait for the lock to release. do not pull the handle harder, bypass the lock or borrow an emergency-release procedure from another model.
diy warning
working on appliances can involve mains electricity, water and moving parts. always disconnect power and water before you start. in Australia, gas work must be done by a licensed gasfitter, and fixed (hard-wired) electrical work by a licensed electrician. everything on this site is guidance only, and any repair you carry out is at your own risk. we are not responsible for any damage or injury caused by attempting a repair. if you are not confident, please use a qualified technician.
